The BKCI Philosophy
Many of us come to a point in our lives when we question our direction and become negative in our attitudes. This is a time when we should take hold of ourselves and analyze what is of value in our experience. In rare cases, maybe a drastic change is needed, but in most situations it requires only a new view of what is around us, a revitalization of physical and mental outlook.
We at Bloomington Karate feel that we can offer you a new and different way to grow/add a new dimension to your thought that can be of use to you in your attitude toward your job and life in general.
The martial arts we practice are not a contest of breaking boards and karate chops, this is a generalized misconception. What it is, is a program of physical exercise designed to develop agility, balance and coordination to add to a person's feeling of well being. It is intermixed with an attempt to understand one's self and his/her relationship to the society he/she lives in, and with this understanding, to develop self-control, respect and confidence in order to cope intelligently with everyday problems.
The martial arts in general and Hapkido in particular, is a personal challenge of self-improvement. It is a means to rise up to a new plan of accomplishment that is satisfying to you and at your own pace. You set the goals, and your gains can be as slow or as rapid as you find justifiable.
Hapkido is built on the participation of everyone at all levels of age and ability and is for either sex. It is a common ground for respect for each other in the trying for improvement. As you grow, you are able to help others grow and develop a tolerance and understanding of each other.
Self respect is built on a series of positive gains that encompass your whole lifestyle. You are all that you have to work with. You must try. Indecision is a decision. It is sitting rather than starting. Starting is trying and that is itself an accomplishment - it is the cornerstone to continue to build on. Any "failure" along the way is a lesson in your learning process. The only failure is in quitting or worse, never starting!
A well functioning body houses a clear mind. Hapkido will help you feel better, calmer, and stronger in addition to learning an effective method of self-defense.

Hapkido / Taekwondo Classes
Hapkido, the art of coordinating internal power, was developed in Korea in the early 1920's by founder Yong Sool Choi. These defensive techniques were originally taught to the ruling family and the the royal court officials. By manipulating the small joints of the body along with applying pressure point manipulation, a smaller person can effectively defend against and control a much large and stronger opponent.
Taekwondo, the art of kicking and punching, is the national sport of Korea. This system teaches many kicks, punches and strikes and is the most popular from of martial art in the world. We teach the Song Moo Kwan traditional style.
Bloomington Karate Center effectively combines these two systems in its courses to provide a complete self defense and exercise program for any individual. Additionally, our students can earn world recognized ranking in both forms of martial arts.
The School's History
The Bloomington Karate Center was first opened in April 1974 by then 8th Degree Master Jun Sun Hyon. Master Hyon emigrated from Korea and opened the first Tae Kwon Do school in Minnesota in 1965. The Bloomington location was the fifth of six schools he opened before retiring in 1977.
Upon retirement, Master Hyon sold the Bloomington location to Grand Master Tim Mullin who had been running the location since 1975. Bloomington Karate has been teaching students continually since 1974. In 1998, C.B. Bunkholt, a 5th Degree, K.I.C.K. World Super Featherweight Kickboxing Champion and a student of Grand Master Mullin's, became the active head Instructor. He continued to run the school as the head instructor until 2008 when he began his pursut of practicing accupunture.
Today the school is run by a coordinated effort of Grandmaster Mullin and his Black Belts and is the oldest and largest martial art school in Bloomington.
The Bloomington Karate Center has been doing business in Bloomington since 1974, longer than any other martial arts school in Bloomington. All of our instructors are certified and accredited by The World Hapkido Federation and The USA Hapkido Central Association.
